New Caledonia Aircalin, Livery Design
Aircalin is the ambassador of New Caledonia and its people in the Pacific and the world.
In 2014, they redesigned the livery of their whole fleet of aircraft, with the objective of being different, stimulating discussion, and creating curiosity and pride.
This is how we worked.
RESEARCH & INSPIRATION
The new design must take inspiration from the New Caledonia identity and from Aircalin values, reflecting heritage and modernity.
Nature
Gorgeous seascapes teeming with fish, a sparkling beach with white sand reflecting the sunlight
HERITAGE
Traditional Kanak handicrafts and architecture are both based on weaving. This heritage is everywhere in New Caledonia.
Art & culture
Caledonian art has multiple aspects, reflecting its historical heritage. Native Kanak art, while preserving its essence, has acquired a form of modernity.

Approach 1
The Caledonian Lagoon x Local Art
Starting with an image of the iconic lagoon, I simplified shapes and perspectives and overlaid lines on each other.

I applied this pattern to the aircraft. The sun, at the end of the tail, enlightens the lagoon painted on the fuselage.

The lagoon is a paradise for divers with its clear water, coral pinnacles and multicolored fauna.

Strength Of Weaving
Handicraft
The Kanak people used to weave a wide variety of household items with cultural significance.
Painting
Often used in art to texturize, painting represents the strength of the unity of Kanak people.
Architecture
Traditional construction methods used for a Kanak hut.

It’s the most modern Caledonian icon and has been inspired by the traditional Kanak village.
It's also the perfect mix of heritage, culture, and modernism.
